Degree programs

Bachelor of Arts in Music (B.A.)
The B.A. in Music is a liberal arts degree that includes study in core music courses, in addition to twenty-nine free elective hours that can be concentrated in any area of study that interests a student. Students must select one primary instrument to complete the requirements of applied lessons. Suggested electives include taking additional MUP performance courses and ensembles, theater (THE) courses for students interested in musical theater, psychology (PSY) courses for students interested in careers in music therapy, or recording technology (CRT) courses for students interested in music production.

Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.)
The B.M.E. is designed for students who desire public school music teaching as a career. This degree program has two areas of specialization: vocal/choral music and instrumental music. The B.M.E. curricula are offered in cooperation with the College of Education and lead to certification for teaching in P-12 music programs.

Master of Education in Music Education (M.Ed.)
The M. Ed. curriculum is a graduate-level program designed to satisfy the certification requirements for the state of Alabama’s Class A teaching certificate.
Scholarships
Scholarship opportunities are available for incoming freshmen and transfer students in Piano, Voice, and Ensembles (Band and Choir). Scholarships are competitive and awarded to students with exceptional musical talent and exemplary academic records. Scholarship applicants must contact the Department of Music and submit an audition request before February 1st to be considered for a scholarship award. Students must:

Be accepted and enroll at Alabama State University as a full-time student.

Demonstrate a high level of proficiency on their instrument or voice

Hold a 3.00 minimum high school GPA or have scored at least a 17 on the ACT or a 900 on the SAT. Transfer students must have a minimum 3.00 GPA from an accredited higher-education institution.

Follow the criteria as listed on the scholarship.

Complete a live, on-campus audition. Out-of-state students unable to visit the campus may submit a recording instead of a live audition.

Ensemble

Any major or

Academic Scholarships

Academic scholarship opportunities are available for incoming freshmen and transfer students.
1. Scholarship Requirements: To be eligible to apply for scholarships, applicants must first be admitted to the university. If you are a freshman, you must also have qualifying test scores to be considered for scholarships (see below).
2. Responsibility of the Student: It is the student's responsibility to confirm their admission status.
3. No Guarantee of Award: Submitting a scholarship application does not guarantee that a student will receive a scholarship.
4. Notification: Students awarded scholarships will be notified by letter.
5. Scholarship Criteria Revision: The university reserves the right to revise scholarship criteria as it deems appropriate.
6. Availability of Funds: Scholarship awards are contingent on the availability of funds.
7. FAFSA Requirement: Students awarded an academic scholarship must have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file. (Not required for international students)

10. To Maintain Academic Scholarship Awards:
a. Awardees must remain enrolled full-time (at least twelve 12 hours per semester.) Awardees must also complete at least 24 semester hours by the end of the spring term.
b. Awardees must have a minimum academic grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale to retain the academic awards the following academic year (Presidential, Excellence, and Incentive) and 2.75 for the Black and Gold Scholarship. Students who are awarded academic scholarships must stay in compliance with the academic scholarship requirements. Those students who do not meet the specified qualifications will not retain a scholarship.
